USA's Asians are heading to the Mountain West |
|
LAS VEGAS — Dozens of workers line up for a buffet catered by Satay Malaysian Grille, a popular Chinatown eatery here. They carry plates piled high with Asian delicacies to nine rows of long tables facing a dais.
By the time the employees savor mango-sticky-rice treats, their luncheon speakers are introduced: a local TV reporter, a former school administrator, a bank founder, a magazine publisher, a chamber of commerce executive, a local politician.
Only one is Anglo. The rest: Chinese, Japanese, Thai — all Asian Americans. |

Locke, Mineta Form a PAC Group for Minorities |
|
In anticipation of the 2008 election, two Asian Pacific American leaders, whose trailblazing political and public service experiences have become inspiring models for empowerment, got together last July to discuss an idea.
The concept was to help energize Americans of Asian and Pacific backgrounds for increased civic and political engagement in order to put them in a vantage position for the changes and opportunities that new leadership and a new administration could bring, and get a greater, fair share of the pie.
The concept needs funds, so the two – Gary Locke, former Washington State Governor, and Norman Y. Mineta, who held two cabinet positions as Commerce Secretary in the Clinton Administration and as Transportation Secretary in the (George W.) Bush Administration – formed America’s Opportunity Fund (AOF), a Political Action Committee, to generate contributions from supporters. |

China Raises Prices on Rice, Wheat |
|
China's government is raising the minimum price it will pay farmers for rice and wheat in a bid to encourage production and ease shortages blamed for a surge in inflation.
The announcement Friday by the country's economic planning agency adds to a string of measures aimed at cooling inflation. The consumer price index accelerated to 8.7 percent in February, hammering Chinese shoppers and raising the risk of unrest.
It was the second time this year the government has raised the minimum price paid for grain. |
